Chapter 12

The phone lay face down on the nightstand. Saanjh hadn't touched it in eleven minutes. She knew because she had been counting. Not because counting eased the restlessness clawing inside her, but because it gave her hands something to do besides reaching for the phone. Eleven minutes slowly became twelve.

The ceiling fan clicked with every slow rotation, a sound she usually ignored. Today, every little noise seemed unnaturally loud. A scooter rumbled somewhere outside. A neighbour shut their door with a sharp bang. Even her own breathing filled the room.
