Ruhi had always believed that fear came like thunder—loud, sudden, crashing through the silence. But now, she knew the truth. Real fear was quiet….It crawled….It watched….It waited.

And this morning, it knocked on her door in the form of the head maid. Madame Rosa never came to the servants’ quarters this early. Her face, usually composed and brisk, was unusually grim. Her lips pressed tight, her eyes… avoiding Ruhi’s.
